The building was built in 1891 as St.Ninian's Episcopal Church, Maxwelltown. It is described in John Gifford's "The Buildings of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway", as 'a simple rectangle with an apsed east end and round arch windows, built of hammered dressed stone'. The building was secularised in the mid-20th century and was used as a joiners workshop until it was purchased by the Dumfries Musical and Operatic Society in 1971/2. (The Society changed its name to the Dumfries Musical Theatre Company at the beginning of 2008). Extensive additions were made to the rear of the building enabling access to the present dressing room and wardrobe space. The first production in the theatre was 'The Gondoliers', directed by Nan Tosh in 1973. Since then, the 91 seat theatre has been used as
a rehearsal space and for the Society's smaller scale productions. The building
is also used for Arts Festival events and by other local groups.
